How To get started with Your Notary Business
"Welcome to the den, future notary leader! It's great to hear you're starting with such a strong vision: providing excellent service, making consistent money, and securing recurring clients. That's the blueprint for success in this industry.
Many notaries start exactly where you are – with passion, but unsure of the first concrete steps. Here's where I'd advise you to begin, drawing from my own experience and the principles we teach at Lions Den Notary Training & Mentorship:
Master the Fundamentals (Beyond the Basics):
Your Foundation is Law: First and foremost, you must truly understand your state's notary laws and guidelines. Don't just pass the test; internalize the rules. This is your shield against errors and liability. As 'The Notary Nerd,' I can tell you that deep knowledge is your biggest asset.
Practice the Acts: Go beyond theory. Practice completing acknowledgments, jurats, and other common notarial certificates until they're second nature. Understand the nuances of each.
Specialization is Your Superpower:
Don't Be a Generalist (Yet): While it's tempting to do everything, focus on one or two high-demand areas first. Loan signings are a prime example, but also consider remote online notarization (RON) if your state allows, or even specialized fields like apostille services. .
Why Specialize? It allows you to become an expert faster, market yourself more effectively, and often command higher fees.
Build Your Professional Presence (Even on a Budget):
Online Hub: A professional website or a well-optimized GoHighLevel funnel page is non-negotiable. It doesn't have to be complex initially, but it needs to clearly state your services, contact information, and professional image. This is where clients find and book you
Google Business Profile: Optimize this immediately. It's often the first place local clients look for a notary.
Professional Branding: Even if you don't have a fancy logo yet, ensure your communication (email, phone, social media) is consistently professional.
Network Strategically:
Connect with Title Companies & Lenders: For loan signings, these are your primary clients. Build relationships, show your professionalism, and demonstrate your reliability.
Engage with Other Notaries: Join notary groups and forums. Learn from experienced professionals, ask questions, and offer help when you can. This is where I found my nickname, 'The Notary Nerd,' and it's where you'll find invaluable peer support
Invest in Mentorship (This is Where I Come In):
